Richard Allen

Whilst I occasionally play with conceptual framing devices of pictures within pictures, my paintings are always intensely representational, observing and being absorbed by the subject. The sculptural, gestural way that I apply paint describes the forms and facets of the landscape. The fleeting play of light on the ground between scudding clouds creating shifting continents of projected light and shade is an aspect of landscape to which I have been particularly drawn in this series of painting of Cley Hill in late spring.

Richard Allen attended Central Saint Martins College in London as a Fine Art (Painting) Undergraduate, studying illustration at Masters level. He has worked as an illustrator winning several international accolades.

Since 2012 he has been returned to painting. He has had work shown in the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition. In 2016, he won the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.
