Rachel Wood is an inventive thrower and hand builder whose complexly layered work powerfully invokes the colours and strata of the landscape. Rachel draws her inspiration from terrains as diverse as temperate Derbyshire in England, and sun-bleached Australia. She uses her various slips and glazes to convey the visual complexity of what she sees and experiences. Tool marks, finger marks, fissures and cracks are integral part of each pot’s character. She studied ceramics at Loughborough College of Art and Design. After a period as studio assistant to the potter Robin Welch, she was artist-in-residence at Rufford Craft Centre, and more recently at Sturt Craft Centre, Australia. She now continues to teach, and exhibits extensively in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, France and Australia.
