Peter Doig

Peter Doig was born in 1959 in Scotland. As a boy he moved with his family to Trinidad and then Canada before moving to London to study at Wimbledon School of Art, St Martin’s School of Art and Chelsea School of Art where he received an MA and was awarded the prestigious Whitechapel Artist Prize in 1991. This culminated in a solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, a major step at such an early stage in his career.

Drawing inspiration from photographs, newspaper clippings, graphic art and cinema, his almost abstract paintings are often landscape based but he notes that his paintings make: “..no attempt to reflect setting”.He has had major solo exhibitions at Tate Britain and important international museums and galleries. His work has been sold at auction up to $12 million.

In 2002 Peter Doig moved back to Trinidad where he has a studio at the Caribbean Contemporary Arts Centre he is also Professor at the Fine Arts Academy in Dusseldorf.
