Much of my early work focussed on capturing a moment in time, and this little set of works, ‘Spirit of Motion’, was intended to develop that theme by exploring what happened before that moment, and what might happen after.
By anchoring each one to its base with the same motif, giving each one the same basic directionality, and using the same visual language throughout, this was an exercise in not only freezing an instant of motion, but also attempting to capture the differing degrees of endeavour that created that motion.
Although each piece stands on its own as a dynamic form, it is only when you see the full set together that the second part of the exercise becomes apparent.
Why 5? I have no idea – I could have produced many more, but there was something about that particular number that just felt right…

Biography
Misti was born in the UK in 1968. Her career path led her to become a designer of bespoke interiors and furniture, specialising in the re-creation of carved period details and ornament, and her commissioned works can be seen in palaces, penthouses and private residences all over the world.
In 2021, she starred in, and won, Channel 4’s televised woodworking competition, earning herself the title of ‘Britain’s Best Woodworker’, and introducing a worldwide audience of millions to her work.
In 2016, feeling that she had taken her skills as a designer to their furthest extreme, and yearning to work more with her hands, Misti set up her studio in Shropshire to concentrate on making contemporary sculpture and objets d’art. Working mainly in wood, occasionally in stone, and often using reclaimed materials, her primary focus is in imbuing her work with a sense of energy and character, using flowing organic forms to give a sense of vitality to her work, and the amount of time she spends finishing each one by hand results in sculptures that are informed as much by touch as they are by design, giving them a sensual tactility.
