Brita Granström is both a painter and an illustrator. She paints outdoors in all weathers and her paintings of interiors are domestic with the activity around the kitchen table, where flowers and plants have been brought in from the garden and are mixed with breakfast or baking. Influenced by Bonnard and his ‘dazzling light’ she believes in his quote: “Draw your pleasure, paint your pleasure, and express your pleasure strongly”.
“My heroes start in my rural Swedish childhood with the wild landscapes that Tove Jansson’s Moomins inhabited. Other heroes include Winifred Nicholson, the humanity of Edward Ardizzone, Pierre Bonnard’s bedazzling light and the dark tonalities of Walter Sickert. I love Bonnard’s quote:‘Draw your pleasure, paint your pleasure, and express your pleasure strongly.’ That’s what I do.”
