Neil Bousfield studied MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England, Bristol, awarded with distinction in 2007. He had previously studied BA (Honours) Animation at West Surrey College of Art and Design, followed by a MSc in 3D Computer Graphics at Teesside University.
Neil’s practice as an artist is expressed within the medium of relief printing and now almost exclusively within the technique of engraving producing single images as limited edition prints and the telling of narrative in book format. Drawing, context and narrative are the focus of his practice: Prints are inspired by a sense of place and a personal interpretation of landscape, place and people and Books, which are long term projects, are driven by a concern with social narrative leading Neil to work within the genre of “silent pictorial narrative” as defined by Lynd Ward and pioneered by Frans Masereel. His novel, The Cycle, is published as Walking Shadows: A Novel Without Words
Neil says: “Engraving demands a determined commitment of a focused and singular nature; like a dog chasing a rabbit, nothing else matters! On an aesthetic level, engraving allows me to express my interest in pattern, texture, landscape, shape and colour.”
Neil’s work is widely exhibited in the UK and USA and is held within major public collections; amongst private collectors, Neil is establishing a loyal following for his work.
