The title of our exhibition ‘Inside Out : Outside In’, has many meanings but here it reflects the knowledge and skills of the artists and their subject matter, sometimes it’s inside, sometimes it’s outside and sometimes it’s bringing the outside in.
Matthew Wood and Brita Granström, are masters of the interior, both find beauty in reflected light. For Matthew, it is the silence and the history of the place that is evident in his work. For Brita, it’s the bustle around the kitchen table, where flowers and plants jostle for space with breakfast and baking. Pete Monaghan’s paintings are studies in line and texture, his use of materials reflects the rambling often scraggly nature of the outbuildings he captures. Dylan Bowen’s contemporary plates, platters and jugs are inspired by early English slipware and can be used inside or out.
In the words of the song by Kenneth Brian Edmunds (Babyface):
“Outside in, inside out, you do it for me ya knock me out”
…..and that’s what art can do for you.
